THE KITARA NATION POETRY CLASSICS: REVIVING UGANDA'S 'LOST' CLASSIC POETRY BOOKS IN THE 21ST CENTURR

TARGET BUDGET

50,000,000 UGX

In Uganda it is commonly said, people do not like to read. This is attributed to, among other reasons, the argument that Uganda does not have enough writers for the young generation to look at and see themselves in the literature that couldgive them confidence to love Ugandan literature.

As Kitara Nation we would like to counter the steriotype theat Uganda has adoes not have role models in literature by researching, reviving and re-issuing some of Uganda's classic poetry books.

The books have already been published but for many reasons, they are no longer in print for distribution. This has greatly impactd on the negative attitude of Ugandans towards Ugandan Literature.

Some authors have passed on and their deaths also meant the death of their works in circulation (Okot p'Biteks latter 2 songs are livining in ignominy); some were published in limited editions here in Uganda while they gained popularity in Europe (ANTHEM FOR AFRICA by Timothy Wangusa, which we have re-issuede this year); while some poems have been never been published and are kept as family memorabilia (The family of Henry Barlow has his poems kept away from the public's eye); and many other examples.

As Kitara Nation we would seek financial help to help revive these classisc, if not for anything, to set a good precendent for future gnerations to always preserve their cultures through preserving books.
